Well it is now May 2014 and summer is just around the corner, which means that it will soon be possible to do a lot more activities outdoors. So in this article I thought it would be a good idea to discuss 6 ways you can take advantage of this warmer, dryer weather, and successfully get back in shape this summer:
1. Go For A Run
If you have ever been on a treadmill for longer than about 10 minutes, you will know just how boring it can be. Plus if you are an outdoor runner, you will know that going for a run in the winter is no fun at all.
So you should seriously consider getting out your running shoes when summer comes around because not only is it a lot more enjoyable to go running in the warm weather, but it’s also a really effective way to burn lots of calories, lose weight and improve your overall fitness.
2. Get On Your Bike
Some people don’t really enjoy running, or find that it is too hard on their knees, legs or feet. In which case, cycling is a great alternative because this will still help you burn lots of calories, but is a lot easier on the body.
A major benefit of cycling over jogging is that because you will be covering a greater distance, you will obviously be able to see a lot more of your local area.
3. Start Walking Regularly
If running and cycling sounds too much like hard work, then going for regular walks is a great to explore your local area and get in shape at the same time. Whilst you won’t necessarily be gasping for breath after a 30-60 minute walk, for example, you will still be burning calories, and you should start seeing results if you go for a walk every day or several times a week.
Walking regularly will also benefit your health because as pointed out in this NHS article, regular walking can help reduce the risk of developing chronic illnesses, which include type 2 diabetes, asthma, strokes, heart disease and certain forms of cancer.
4. Take Up A New Sport
If you find yourself leading quite a sedentary lifestyle during the winter, you might want to think about getting into shape during the spring and summer by taking up a new outdoor sport.
Any sport that will help get you moving will be beneficial, whether it’s soccer, rugby, or cricket, for example, and even a sport such as golf will be beneficial because of the amount of walking that you will be doing each round.
5. Hit The Beach
One of the best things about the summer is that you can head to the beach and lie in the sun to your heart’s content. However you can also use this time to help you get back in shape.
That’s because by heading into the sea and doing lots of swimming, you can start burning lots of calories, whilst at the same time toning your body because swimming is great for toning and weight loss and offers a full-body workout.
6. Take Your Workouts Outside
Finally, if you like to exercise indoors during the winter, whether it’s yoga or some kind of other mat-based exercise, you can take your workouts outside when it starts to get a lot warmer.
Alternatively if you are completely new to yoga, you might like to sign up to an outdoor yoga class at this time of the year because these workouts, which often take place in parks and other public spaces, are a great deal of fun.
So if you have let yourself go a little bit during the previous 6-9 months, these are some of the activities that can help you get your old body back this summer.
