Many people enrol with their local gym because they want to build up their strength and become a lot more muscular. However many people join because they simply want to lose a bit of weight.
So with access to so many different exercise machines, why do a lot of people still fail to lose any weight?
Well there may be several reasons why they are unsuccessful, but here are some of the most common ones, which you may be able to relate to yourself:
1. The Wrong Approach
It is natural to start lifting a few weights when you first start visiting the gym, but whilst this can aid weight loss to some extent, you will generally have far better results if you focus more on the cardio machines instead.
That’s because the exercise bikes, treadmills and rowing machines, for example, will help burn a lot more calories and will really kickstart your weight loss.
2. Lack Of Focus And Discipline
If you are lucky enough to be a member of a gym that has a steam room and / or sauna, you will know that these are a lot more appealing than the treadmills, for example.
These rooms are very relaxing and will make you sweat a great deal, which is why many people automatically assume that they are good for weight loss, but scientific research doesn’t back this up. So you should try to spend more time on the exercise machines and less time in the sauna or steam room if you are serious about losing weight.
3. The Workout Routine Never Changes
Lots of people love routines, but when it comes to exercise, you don’t really want to be stuck in the same routine all the time. If you find that you can do 30 minutes on the exercise bike without any problems and it has become really easy, then you should be looking to up the resistance or increase the length of time you spend on the exercise bike.
Similarly if you always use exactly the same machines, why not start using a different machine that you haven’t used before in order to burn more calories and work different muscle groups. Sometimes people fail to lose weight because their workout routines are simply far too easy.
4. Poor Diet
I have come across several people in my local gym who are always working out three or four times a week, but still can’t shift some of their excess weight, and a lot of the time it’s because they are eating a poor diet away from the gym.
It is completely pointless burning off loads of calories in the gym if you are continuing to consume 3000+ calories per day, for example, or if you love to eat a lot of junk food during the week. The truth is that a regular exercise regime combined with a healthy low-calorie diet is the real key to success when it comes to weight loss.
